Icons, Heroes, Outsiders

Film and Biography

Biographical films have existed since the earliest days of cinema, and cover a broad variety of styles, from the Hollywood 'biopic' to the documentary film. The main focus of this volume is on biographical films of the last two decades. Cinematic representations of Frida Kahlo, Jackson Pollock, Marie Antoinette, Sophie Scholl and others are examined with reference to narrative structures and aesthetic concepts. The articles also explore the question of how biographical depiction in film reflects social and cultural change, and enquire into the complex relationship between the documentary and the fictional.

A companion volume to the  'Inside Stories' film symposium (23 - 25 November 2007 in the Austrian Film Museum). In German.
